As a Glassware Washer, you will help to maintain a supply of clean and sterile laboratory ware by collecting all used and contaminated glassware, plastic ware and metal items as required. Cleaning will be performed by using the appropriate method such as autoclaving, hand or machine washing or other methods as required.

Shift: Monday-Friday 7:00am- 5:00pm, 0-24 hours per week

Although this posting indicates an initial area of assignment and shift, the Hospital reserves the right to assign to other areas of assignment and shifts as deemed necessary.

Here’s What You’ll Get To Do:

1.       Process glassware & other materials

  • Picks up dirty glassware, liquid waste, liquid media from assigned labs;  washes, decontaminates, and re sterilizes as required.
  • Changes pipette containers in accordance with proper procedure.
  • Processes glassware by hand or machine washing as appropriate.
  • Prepares glassware for sterilization (if required).
  • Dries glassware if necessary.
  • Returns clean/sterile glassware to common glassware storage rooms or designated labs.
  • Sterilizes liquid media and delivers to the common glassware on each floor.
  • Sterilizes dry items and delivers to common glassware room.
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment and room (e.g. carts, sinks, washing machines, autoclaves, counters, etc).
  • Handles infectious materials, strong detergents, caustic and acid cleaning solutions, used pipettes, needles, and other hazardous items using the proper methods, protective. equipment, and safety clothing.
  • Follows safety rules at all times.
  • Performs other duties as required.

2.      Communicates effectively with other team members, the Manager, and research staff about the following:

  • Procedural changes.
  • Equipment problems.
  • Staff scheduling changes.
  • Complaints/concerns from labs.
  • Safety issues/concerns.
  • Possible improvements in methods.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Ability to speak, comprehend and read English at a high-school level.
  • Familiar with autoclaves, hot air ovens, automatic washers, pipette pluggers and other equipment necessary to complete duties in wash-up area.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform work of a technical nature in accordance with defined procedures.
  • Able to be trained in specific glass washing and sterilization procedures.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Attention to details to achieve proper results.
  • Visual concentration is required to assess cleanliness/condition of final product.

Work Environment:

  • Care is required in handling biohazardous materials, operating equipment (washers, ovens and autoclaves) and lifting/loading/moving materials
  • Work involves us of detergents, javex, acetone, other cleaning chemicals.
  • Job is physically demanding (e.g., standing, walking, lifting, pushing carts, loading/unloading machines, etc).
