What is coaching?

While there are different definitions of professional coaching, we characterize coaching as a collaborative process that takes you from your current state (where you are right now) to your desired future state (where you want to be). Under pining this is a belief that the client is the expert in his/her personal and/or professional life and that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole.

A primary focus of coaching is for the client to create actionable steps to achieve specific goals in his/her work or personal life. The emphasis is on action, accountability and follow-through as part of a change-management process. Coaching is further characterized by its use of a questioning framework, versus a telling/advising approach.

The International Coach Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

What’s the difference between counselling, consulting, training, mentoring and coaching?

Professional coaching is a distinct service profession that emphasizes goal setting, outcome creation and change management. Here are some ways that coaching differs from counselling, consulting, training and mentoring:
  • Counseling typically aims to resolve problems stemming from the past and provide emotional healing. Coaching is almost exclusively future-focused and tied to forward movement and views the client as creative, resourceful and whole.
  • Consulting entails drawing on an expert who will diagnose problems and recommend and/or implement solutions. Coaching assumes clients have the capacity to create their own solutions, with the coach facilitating client awareness and discovery. Coaches do not give advice on how to solve a problem.
  • Training guides and advises people so that they meet learning objectives established by the trainer. In coaching, the agenda and outcomes are established by the client.
  • Mentoring is generally providing guidance to an individual based on specific experience that the Mentor has and the Mentee seeks. While a coach may have experience that is relevant to the client, the coach assists the client in finding the best path for themselves.

What experience does my coach have?

CareerAIM’s stable of coaches consists of professional coaches who are certified through the International Coach Federation (ICF). What can I expect from coaching?

Once you’ve been assigned a coach, you’ll connect with him/her on a regular basis, toll free, by telephone. Information about the length and number of coaching sessions you will receive is in your Welcome Letter.

Coaching sessions will likely occur every 1-2 weeks to help ensure you’re moving towards your goals. You’ll set up, with your coach, a frequency and time of day to connect for coaching sessions that works for you.

Depending on your package, you may have between-sessions tasks to complete or readings, specifically created for you.

You will determine the focus /agenda of the coaching. Your coach in turn will provide a non-judgmental space for you to explore options and set goals for yourself. You can also count on him/her to listen actively, ask powerful questions and bring a genuine optimistic belief in your ability.

Will I need to go into an office to receive coaching?

Coaching services are currently offered remotely. So you can conveniently connect with your coach, toll free, by phone.

What languages are offered for coaching?

Coaching is available in English and French.

How do I schedule my first coaching session?

Contact CareerAIM at 1-800-941-1956 or email transition@CareerAIM.com to make your first appointment. You’ll then receive a confirmation email with the name of your coach, contact details and some documents to complete and submit before your first coaching session. You must schedule your first coaching session within three months of the purchase date of your CareerAIM Transition Package or you will forfeit your coaching sessions.

What do I need to do before my first coaching session?

There will be some documents that you will need to complete and return to your coach before your first session. These documents will be emailed to you as part of your Confirmation Email.

What if I need to cancel and reschedule a coaching session?

Notify your coach as soon as possible. A minimum notice of 48 hours is required should you need to reschedule/cancel a coaching session.

How do I schedule my CareerAIM-Pro job search training?

At a mutually agreed time, your coach will provide you with contact information to make an appointment with a CareerAIM Job Search Training Specialist.

How long will my CareerAIM Transition Program last?

You have a maximum of six months from the date of purchase to complete the coaching portion of your program. You will have access to the CareerAIM-Pro job search engine and Email Job Alerts for one year from the purchase date.

How do I extend my CareerAIM Transition Program?
